Technical Fabrics

WHAT IS TECHNICAL FABRIC?

There is a wide variety of technical fabrics available on the market today, used in everything from sportswear to sleepwear.

A technical fabric is designed to provide a specific function or benefit. Originally created with performance in mind rather than aesthetics, these fabrics focused on durability, protection, or flexibility.

However, with advancements in fabric technology, it is now easier than ever to find technical textiles that combine both functionality and style.

HOW IS IT MANUFACTURED?

Each technical fabric is produced in its own unique way, combining specialized expertise, diverse fibers, and advanced techniques to achieve maximum performance. These materials are developed to serve specific functions, resulting in some of the most efficient and practical fabrics available.

Common categories include:

  1. Industrial textiles
  2. Functional textiles
  3. Performance textiles
  4. High-tech textiles
  5. Engineered textiles

Every type is carefully manufactured, backed by extensive scientific research and testing, to ensure it meets the highest standards and is perfectly suited to its intended purpose.

PURPOSES OF TECHNICAL FABRIC

Technical fabrics cover a broad spectrum of applications, from protective clothing and medical textiles to sportswear and even spacesuits. Their core purpose is to deliver specific functions for their intended use. For instance, firefighters rely on uniforms designed to shield them from extreme heat and radiation—fabrics that are highly specialized and rigorously tested over many years.

PROPERTIES

With such a wide range of applications, technical textiles come with an equally broad variety of properties. Their functional qualities typically take priority over aesthetics, as these fabrics are created to serve a specific purpose. They may be woven, non-woven, or a combination of both, and can be produced in single or multiple layers. Depending on the requirements, technical fabrics are made from a diverse selection of fibers to deliver the right balance of performance and durability.

ADVANTAGES OF TECHNICAL FABRIC

It’s no longer enough for textiles to simply look and feel good — with modern advancements, they also need to perform. From keeping you dry and cool during a marathon to providing warmth and insulation on a mountain trek, technical fabrics deliver a wide range of benefits for both everyday use and highly specialized needs. Thanks to innovations in textile technology, we now enjoy fabrics that let skin breathe while keeping us warm and dry, or even textiles integrated with satellite technology for tracking and communication. With technical fabrics, the possibilities are virtually limitless.

WICKING TECHNOLOGY

Wicking fabrics are advanced technical textiles designed to pull moisture away from the body. Made from high-tech polyester and similar synthetics, they absorb far less water than cotton. Unlike cotton, which traps sweat and leaves garments heavy and clammy, wicking fabrics keep you dry and comfortable.

The difference lies in the yarn. While regular yarn is round, wicking yarn is synthetic and engineered in shapes such as cross or flower forms, creating extra spaces and channels for moisture to travel. This structure enables what’s known as one-way or mechanical wicking.

The fabric is knitted in a way that drives sweat from the skin to the garment’s outer layer, where it spreads across a larger surface. This allows moisture to evaporate faster and more efficiently—keeping the wearer cooler, lighter, and more comfortable during activity.
